Inflatable penile prosthesis
A penile prosthesis is a device placed entirely inside the body that produces a firm, natural-feeling erection on demand. It is the definitive treatment for erectile dysfunction when medication, injections or vacuum devices have failed, are contraindicated, or are simply not acceptable to the patient — including men with ED after prostate cancer treatment or with Peyronie's disease.
How it works
Two cylinders are placed in the penis, a small pump sits in the scrotum, and a reservoir holds fluid (for example, the AMS 700™ inflatable prosthesis). Squeezing the pump inflates the cylinders; pressing a release deflates them. Nothing is visible externally, and sensation, orgasm and ejaculation are preserved.
Outcomes
Patient and partner satisfaction rates above 90 percent are consistently reported, and modern devices are designed to last many years. Surgery is typically outpatient or a single night in the hospital, with return to sexual activity at four to six weeks.
Dr. Sosenko's residency training included prosthetic urology, and he offers this option to men who have been told there is nothing more to be done.
